Dear Leaders,
When we think about progress, we often imagine big changes, bold transformations, or dramatically different results from the norm. But in my experience, that’s not how true change happens. Real change happens slowly, with small wins that add up over time and collectively make a significant difference.
Small wins are those seemingly modest steps forward. For leaders focused on making progress, this can mean a brief but significant conversation, a more efficient meeting after trying a new strategy, or approaching a new situation with a fresh mindset to reduce stress. On their own, any of these things may seem insignificant. However, consistent small wins over time can generate momentum and a sense of possibility that leads to lasting change.
When facing a challenging situation, it‘s easy to become overwhelmed by all the things that need to be improved. However, over the course of my leadership journey, I have learned that focusing on small wins can lead to dramatic improvement. Inspiring others to embrace the need for improvement doesn’t start with dramatic change, but small wins can light a spark across the organization. Eventually, that spark can become a movement.
Small wins matter because they:
Build confidence in team members and reinforce the belief that improvement is possible.
Create positive energy and build momentum toward positive change.
Show a path forward, providing a visual example for those who may need to see it before they can believe it.
As leaders, we can leverage the power of small wins by naming them, sharing them, and stacking them, connecting the dots for those who may not be able to see the progress that is occurring if they are distracted by looking for the final result rather than the journey it takes to get there. As your team experiences small wins:
Name them. Point out and celebrate progress, even if it’s incremental.
Share the story. Let others hear how a small step created momentum, inspiring replication.
Stack them. Discuss the small wins with others and help them connect the dots, so they can see the growth that is happening.
Leadership isn’t only about the grand vision; it’s about noticing and nurturing each step along the way. The joy is in the journey. That’s why it’s important to focus on progress rather than the finish line. This week, look for a small win on your team or in your own practice. Name it, celebrate it, and let it be a valuable step in your journey to success. Every step counts, so remember to lead with heart, soul, and from the inside out.
Yours in Leadership,
Latoya
